How it works 16 Different dishes consisting of nine courses are prepared on open fires and presented as a rolling buffet.

De Vette Mossel (The Fat Mussel) offers much more than perfectly prepared seafood – this is an experience – in unusual and informal surroundings with traditional Cape fishing culture – in true West Coast Style. Whether it is on an unspoilt beach along the Cape Garden Route or deep in the hinterland.

Here you relax with friends (old ones and newly found ones) and where your time is your own. Relax, wind down – we eat for nearly three hours! And remember, we will never run out of anything – the worst that can happen is that more is on the way!

Do not expect hand-crafted crystal glasses, or silver cutlery – you are on the beach, and we do it as we would along the West Coast.

Menu

And of course, Pot Bread, which is baked throughout the meal, with farm butter and jam/preserve (Careful, this is the Delilah on the menu!). The majority of the courses is prepared in full view on open fires in front of you – this guarantees off–the-grid-fresh seafood – the only way to do it.

2. West Coast Snoek– with Sweet sweet potato– West Coast style
3. Seafood pot with 4 types of fish, calamari strips, mussels and cleaned prawn tails
Rice (for those who want to catch the sauce)
Garden salad(we seldom talk about salads)
Vegetable dish with milk and cheese (even Karoo farmers tuck in)
4. Meat potjie (for those who don’t eat seafood)

6. West Coast Rock Lobster/Whole Prawns – additional (for those who ordered it)
7. Calamari Steak– pan fried with onions and olive oil/butter (this is how it should taste)

9. Coffee and Koeksisters(sorry – we do not do tea!)

A wedding on the beach just a dream??

No need – seal your love on an unspoilt beach along the beautiful Garden Route, of on any of our seaside beaches in the middle of the country! We believe that De Vette Mossel with its exceptional locations, outstanding menu, unique character and way of doing things, are probably the most extraordinary beach wedding venues in South Africa.

We also specialize in functions and lend to numerous and fitting themes – Pirates, Fun on the Beach, Hawaiin, Beach Party, etc. The restaurants can seat between 120 and 600 guests.

WHO ARE WE?
HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN?

In December 2004, owner Niël du Bois followed his heart, gave his creative spirit free reins, took the plunge and did what many people only dream about – opening an open air restaurant literally on a beach. Where the best seafood is prepared and enjoyed in Spartan surroundings – just like on the West Coast.

The first De Vette Mossel Beach Seafood Restaurant was born. On an isolated and pristine beach at Groot Brak River near Mossel Bay.

Thanks to the continuous support by our newly found Mossel friends, De Vette Mossel grew and grew. For Niël, De Vette Mossel is still like a vacation – bare feet along one of South Africa’s most beautiful beaches, the get together with old Mossel friends and the making of new ones – every day!

Since October 2012 you can also off your shoes at the second De Vette Mossel on our Bushveld Beach at Hartbeespoortdam, North West, a year later on our little piece of sea paradise in the Free State –De Vette Mossel @ Parys, and since December 2018 in the Whale Coast at Hermanus near Cape Town.
